So in general, I personally consider them canon, but continuity errors are trumped by the movies. This makes a HUGE continuity error if you tried to accept some of the reference material for the third movie about dragons only being born in the hidden world. Now, that said: the animated short, gift of the night fury IS canon, and even had a reference or two made to it from the third movie. From the movie team's statements though, the TV series production team and the movie series teams did not collaborate. He voiced that this was his goal since he was asked to start production on a sequel originally HTTYD only had the one single 2010 film planned and that's it.ĭepending on how you interpret the movie, and what parts of the trilogy you weigh more heavily, you're either going to find closure or confusion.ĭreamworks has not officially stated if RTTE is canon or not. Know that Dean Deblois wanted an ending like the books. Why the heck are we only hearing about the hidden world in the third movie? Hiccup and toothless had wanderlust in the opening of the second movie, I would expect there to be mention of them trying to find this mythical land then. Why was it portrayed that toothless having found a mate would make hiccup's bond mutually exclusive? Even if and when toothless took up his alpha duties and fatherly care, why would this suddenly exclude his best friend, whom they loved dearly, and nearly died together with so many times with toothless running to his aid, willing to die for hiccup? I would, at minimum, expect toothless to visit from time to time, instead hiccup had to seek them out after 10 years. Why did they only make one attempt to enter the hidden world? Why didn't they try to change minds like they set out before in the previous movies? Then it becomes a whole different can of moral worms that I don't want to open. If they have a compulsion to follow their alpha, well. They were treated as free beings with a home to come back to. Why did the dragons chose to leave? They loved being with the berkians. In a more in depth analysis, it raises more questions. Why did ALL berkians also release their dragons just because toothless was allowed to leave? This seemed odd. They would, to a pretty good accuracy, remembering where the hidden world is when they first encountered it and survived. With the feats the villians have accomplished in the movies, and with the tales of those sailors of the hidden world, how is it that no one found it again? If it was across a vast sea, thousands of miles, I would understand, but the people of this time period were pretty good at mapping and navigation.

However, what is confusing is that somehow these survivors associated this huge hole with an underground cavern, and that is where dragons all came from. The tale of the lost world already circulates among merchants and sailors, told by those who learned to turn away from the falls before being swallowed up.

We still know so little about night furies and never got these answers. Unless night furies were some recent evolution, or just super rare already, this would seem like an impossible task to do in a single human lifetime, especially given how absurdly dangerous they are. Grimmel claims to have killed all the night furies. There are many references to dragons existing far far away from the berk region. The confusions that you're already discovering: Hiccup wanted to be that true best friend, and encouraged him to leave, he didn't want to be holding toothless back from happiness. You can see it in toothless' actions after the villain was defeated, he wanted to go back to the hidden world. It told us that dragons are not safe among humans either, due to greed and power hunger. They never elaborated why, other than the fact the wild dragons attacked hiccup and astrid. The movie told us that the berkians weren't welcome to the hidden world, that they didn't belong. At the end, I'll give my own opinion with forewarning. I'm trying to make this as neutral as possible to answer your question and give you a lot of good info, hopefully without flaring anything up.
